From the Publisher's Desk
Quote from an October 30, 2008 campaign rally in Columbia, Missouri. We trust your holiday season was as happy and joyous as ours was, albeit I have to admit I had a wee bit too much falling over water during the festive season. There's nothing like laying back during the holidays sipping on a toddy or two or three, whilst reading a good book and catching a decent flick on the one eyed monster! One of my enjoyable holiday gifts was from my significant other, an excellent book and very good read indeed. If there is one post holiday gift to share in 2014, and I encourage you to do so, treat yourself and pick up the book "Policing America's Empire: The United States, the Philippines, and the Rise of the Surveillance State" by Alfred W. McCoy, around US$22.50 from Amazon.com. The essay [above] "A Century of America's Imperial Deep State" gives you a good overview of the book, that causes consideration consternation whilst providing a sobering view what America's surveillance future will be, along with the devastating impact that is to be forced upon us, Americans and non Americans alike! For instance, think about this quote from Mr. McCoy; "To store and process the billions of messages sucked up by its worldwide surveillance network (totaling 97 billion items for March alone), the NSA is employing 11,000 workers to build a $1.6 billion data center in Bluffdale, Utah, whose storage capacity is measured in "yottabytes," each the equivalent of a trillion terabytes. That's almost unimaginable once you realize that just 15 terabytes could store every publication in the Library of Congress." For clarification purposes: a yottabyte is a unit of information equal to 1000 zettabytes or 10^24 bytes a zettabyte is a unit of information equal to 1000 exabytes or 10^21 bytes a exabyte is a unit of information equal to 1000 petabytes or 10^18 bytes a petabyte is a unit of information equal to 1000 terabytes or 10^15 bytes a terabyte is a unit of information equal to 1000 gigabytes or 10^12 (1,000,000,000,000) bytes or a unit of information equal to 1024 gibibytes or 2^40 (1,099,511,627,776) bytes a gibibyte is a unit of information equal to 1024 mebibytes or 2^30 (1,073,741,824) bytes Is other words that's a staggering amount of storage ability and for what purpose/s? Clearly its not going to be good for us, and that's guaranteed! We can only imagine what 'they' are going to include with all the data they are sucking up illegally.
