"Individuals have international duties which transcend the national
obligations of obedience. Therefore [individual citizens] have the
duty to violate domestic laws to prevent crimes against peace and
humanity from occurring." - Nuremberg War Crime Tribunal, 1950
The US constitution has been made irrelevant by the Bush administration!
It's halloween time in Amerika, but the following letter we received recently is any "trick or treat!" It's a damning indictment of the United States from a War Hero. The letter speaks for and of itself.
Read on!
Dear Shamrock,
I would like to thank and congratulate you for an excellent newsletter, web site and the products and services you offer.
I'm probably your oldest newsletter subscriber age wise. I am 75 years young and hope to keep reading your newsletter until I'm 100!
I am a Polish American citizen and proud of it, having been born in Krakow Poland before the start of the Second World War. I am old enough to remember the good times in Poland. Then came the Second World War and the bad times. My parents, grandparents, siblings and I were forced to do things against our will during the German occupation. The end of that war saw the Russians come to 'liberate' us, but we were once again forced to do things against our will under their brutal regime. Things were worse under the Russians, much worse!
My father, grandfather and two older brothers were murdered by the Russians during their occupation. No need to get into such terrible memories, but suffice it said that it wasn't nice to see your mother, grandmother and sisters raped in front of your eyes. When my father, grandfather and older brothers (just teenagers at the time,) tried to stop the Russians, they were machine gunned to death in front of us.
My mother, grandmother, three sisters and I (the youngest,) escaped to the West only because my mother, a very attractive woman, slept with the commandant who gave us the exit visas and saw to our safe passage. My mother was proud to tell her children and grandchildren this, as it saved our lives! We departed the week I was suppose to be drafted into the 'Polish' Red army!
My grandmother didn't survive the journey. I will believe to my dying day that she died of a broken heart, having been raped at age 70 and her husband, son, and grandsons murdered trying to save her, her daughter and granddaughters. That coupled with losing her homeland was just too much for the woman, but at least she died a free woman, in her sleep on the boat to freedom. She was buried at sea in free international waters!
We arrived in America on July 4th, 1949 with five Swiss Francs in our pockets between us, two candles, 3 pencils, a pad of white paper, the cloths on our backs and 16 tins of sardines. We lived on sardines for the first 6 months in America. To this day I hate sardines as it reminds me of the hard days. My family and I went to work as soon as we arrived in an America that rewarded those who worked hard and honestly. America was recovering from the depression of the 1920's and 30's and the war. We all worked very hard and prospered. I served in the US army during the Korean conflict and my mother, sisters and I became American citizens shortly after my return home from duty. I was wounded during the Korean War and received the Purple Heart, which I proudly displace in my living room, over the fireplace.
I got married and my wife and I started a small food processing business, which prospered over the years and we had a family. My children grew up, went to the best schools and universities, then married and had their own families and came to work in the family business. We lived and became the American dream.
Then things started to change. It started to change in the 1980's but took a turn for the worse in the 1990's! Our government started lying to us; the bureaucrats used their power to intimidate and threaten us by coercion and the politicians started acting like the Nazi's and Russians we lived under previously. Worse we once again, were forced to start doing things against our will in America!
Around 1990-91, before I retired, the IRS audited our companies. We were forced to sign 'waivers', which amounted to being forced to give up our constitutional right of self incrimination. After a lengthily and brutal battle with the IRS that lasted for several stressful years, we settled for more than a quarter of a million USD; more than 1/4th of my net worth at that time! Our accountant and tax attorney, who cost another $300,000 defending us, said we didn't owe the IRS anything, but that it was better to settle or the cases would drag on forever! More than half my net worth was wiped out in this unnecessary debacle. We had to take out loans to pay the IRS, the accountants and tax lawyers and to keep the businesses running. This was after having paid everything off previously and being totally debt free.
Today in America you are guilty until you prove yourself innocent. The problem is that it is very expensive, time consuming and stressful for you and your loved ones to prove yourself innocent. From my personal experience and from what I see happening in America today, I no longer believe that America is the land of the free.
I turned over the businesses to my son, daughters and their spouses, when I turned 66 and retired. The years following my retirement only saw more coercion from the regulatory agencies. The FDA, OSHA, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA,) state and federal tax authorities, all had our businesses in their sites and continually hit us with lawsuits, never ending regulatory requirements and other nonsensical compliance matters that were costly in time, stress and money. It got particularly bad in 1998-99, when my children consulted me about selling the businesses because of continued government harassment and having to spend half of their time filling out government forms and compliance reports of one sort or another. That's when I started looking for answers and found you PT Shamrock, on the Internet!
Though I not as strongly anti-government as you are, I have changed my mind about the people running this country, especially during the past 15 years. It's no longer the elected politicians who run this country. It is the mindless and unaccountable bureaucrats who love to exert their power over the hard working Americas who made this country tick. I can fully appreciate the term you coined the bureaucrats with, "Terrocrats," because they use their power over you in a coercive manner in order to get you to comply with whatever. They forget we pay their salaries!
My wife of 51 years has crippling arthritis. When this airport ID mess started without notice some years back, my wife was denied boarding and had to stand in line at the county DMV for 5 hours to receive a government issued ID card, which would 'entitle' her to travel on an airplane! That is nothing more than the ID cards we were forced to have on our persons at all times in Poland during the Nazi and Russian occupations. Failure to have your 'ID' on you, or showing your ID when demanded by "anyone" in authority, subjected you to the most severe imprisonment.
Worse, my daughter has mistakenly been placed on a "TSA" blacklist due to 9/11. Her crime? She married a very nice gentleman with a common surname. In spite of the fact that she's female, and the person the government placed on the list is a male, 13 years her junior, she is stopped, searched (sometimes stripped searched) 3 or 4 times and IF she's lucky allowed to board the flight. About 1 out of 5 times she is denied boarding altogether and has to take another flight, no easy task from the small town with limited air service were we live. She is unable to get herself off the list and no one seems to be able to do anything about it to help her, not even our Congressman or Senator!
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) initiative - the Computer Assisted Passenger Pre-Screening System or CAPPS II - is allegedly aimed at making air travel safer and more efficient. It has been my families experience to find that laughable and to the contrary, far from being safer and more efficient.
When I retired I had to go to the Social Security office with my lawyer and fight on appeal for my pension. During the audit prior to my retirement, I had made the comment that they, the IRS, were acting like the Nazi's my family and I were forced to live under. The IRS agent, unbeknownst to myself, accountant and tax attorney, placed that comment in my 'file' and I nearly didn't receive my pension for speaking my mind! It cost me in attorney bills, the equivalent of 25 months pension benefits to pay for the appeal process to get what I was legally entitled to. I seriously doubt that real free speech is allowed in today's America, at least without repercussions of one nature or another.
After years of stress, audits, lawsuits and abuse from uncountable government regulatory agencies, and countless hours of filling out more than 173 different government forms wasting half of their working time and manpower, my children and their spouses decided to sell the business and get on with their lives doing something else. They sold out to a large, well known food firm for a fair price (before taxes,) who then proceeded, in spite of promises to the contrary, of stripping our business assets to the bone, and firing everyone who worked for us! We had 135 good, salt of the earth; hard working Americans working for us (and all their families,) who lost their lifetime jobs indirectly because of the government.
Today my daughters work for free at the local charities, while my son and son-in-laws work for someone else at a 9 to 5 job within the same county we live, albeit at a decrease in income of more than 50 percent before taxes than they made working in our family business! All of them vow never again to own a business in the United States, anywhere as you are punished for becoming successful today, instead of being rewarded like when I first arrived more than a half century ago.
How is the American taxpayer and the country benefiting by 135 people losing well paid jobs; my children and their spouses paying far less in taxes than they did while running their own business? How many more times are the difficulties we encounter by bureaucratic coercion being repeated across America? What is the lost in taxes and the cost in productivity to this country? These are serious questions each and every person needs to think about because all of us are paying for the actions and reactions our government has and continues to create. I am certain my story is but a small drop in the ocean compared to what is happening around the United States today, but the fact of the matter is that it is happening.
I don't like what's happened to America. I don't like what our leaders are doing, i.e. lying and deceiving the general public about going to war in Iraq and many other matters. Worse of all, even if you elect a decent and honest person to become the president, assuming they are legally elected, or elect a Senator or Congressman, the bureaucrats from the top down to the local municipalities will never change, so what's the use any longer? My friend, who worked for the government for 35 years before retiring, told me that a government employee today would have to go into their office and start shooting and killing everyone before the government would take action to discipline or fire someone! What kind of government is that?
I've resigned myself to living out the rest of my life to the best of my ability in this country, but I don't like it. Anyone 25 years or more younger than me should seriously think about starting life anew elsewhere.
Some say I'm unappreciative for what America has given me. That's not true. We've worked hard for everything we got only to see politicians and bureaucrats take from those who work the hardest and give it to those seeking to live off welfare and getting a free ride and preferential treatment in today's America. I suppose I could go on and on but its time for an old man to take his nap.
Thanks again for your newsletter and for allowing me the opportunity to blow off steam that has been building up for years. Perhaps my letter may alert a reader or two and awaken them to do something and change their life before it's too late. It's a damn shame what's happened to America, but we all are allowing it to continue to happen.
Very truly yours,
G.K. - small town America
